Black Mold vs. Regular Mold: What's the Difference and Why It Matters
Not all mold is 'black mold.' Here's the science behind different mold types, actual health risks, and when professional remediation is required.

The Truth About "Black Mold"
When homeowners discover mold, the first question is almost always: "Is it black mold?" The phrase has become shorthand for "dangerous mold" — but the reality is considerably more nuanced.
What Is "Black Mold"?
The term typically refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, a dark greenish-black mold associated with serious health effects. However: many common, less-toxic molds are also dark in color; visual identification is not reliable — laboratory testing is required for accurate species identification; Stachybotrys requires extremely high moisture levels and extended water contact to establish.
Common Household Mold Types
- Aspergillus — Most common indoor mold. Can appear white, gray, green, or black. Primarily allergenic. Some species cause serious infections in immunocompromised individuals.
- Cladosporium — Olive-green to black. Found on fabrics, carpets, and condensation-affected surfaces. Primarily allergenic, causes respiratory symptoms and eye irritation.
- Penicillium — Blue-green or white. Found on water-damaged materials. Known allergen, fast-spreading.
- Stachybotrys (True "Black Mold") — Dark greenish-black, slimy. Found in chronically wet areas. Associated with mycotoxin production and serious respiratory and neurological effects at high exposure levels.
Health Effects
- All indoor mold in significant quantities is problematic — regardless of species
- Allergenic mold (the majority) causes respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, and asthma exacerbation
- Toxic mold can produce mycotoxins causing more serious symptoms
- Immunocompromised individuals, infants, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions are at significantly higher risk
When Is Professional Remediation Required?
EPA recommends professional remediation for: mold growth exceeding 10 square feet, any mold in HVAC systems, mold associated with sewage contamination, or any situation where an occupant has health conditions exacerbated by mold. For smaller surface mold on non-porous materials (tile, glass), careful DIY cleanup may be appropriate — but if you can see mold, there is often significantly more behind the visible surface.
